Ilan Vardi
Hello, I am at
the Ecole Polytechnique .
If you want to reach me, send me
e-mail or
regular mail
Ilan Vardi, Departement d'Informatique, Ecole Polytechnique,
91128 Palaiseau, France.
If I'm not here, then I am probably
elsewhere with my
foxy wife.
I have written papers
(see the
math reviews and what
Science News has to say) on a number of different subjects.
See my resume
(in postscript ).
I am an editor of
Advances in Applied Mathematics , and you can submit articles
to me directly.
New!
I have typeset Field medalist
Paul J. Cohen's 1958 Ph.D. thesis
Topics in the theory of uniqueness of trigonometrical series
. This work was
previously only available at the University of Chicago library.
Though Paul Cohen is best known for his groundbreaking
work in set theory, he also had many important contributions in harmonic
analysis starting with his thesis which is still
relevant to current research in this area. I have included
a brief summary and bibliography of subsequent work in this area.

When I was a kid, all I did was play chess.
This is me losing to future grandmaster
Kevin Spraggett
in the final round of the 1975 Montreal Open (but hey,
I tied for first).
I gave a
lecture
at a
special mathematics day
at the
Centre Pompidou on September 18, 2000.
I have written
an IHES visitor's guide
and answers to some
Frequently Asked Questions.
I have also just written a
sightseeing guide
to the region near the IHES.
I have just finished writing up a complete solution set
to
Mekh-mat entrance examination problems
(or go directly to the postscript file).
These consist of ``killer problems''
given to Jewish candidates to the Mek-mat in Moscow
during the 1970's and 1980's. See the
list of problems .
For comparison, I have also written up
solutions to the year 2000
International Mathematical Olympiad,
see the postscript file .
Here are the questions .
